RELATIONSHIP SITUATION

Mom criticizes parenting in front of kids

relationship situation

What happened

Sun 3:10 PM Your mom just told me in front of the kids that I "let them get away with everything." Sun 3:15 PM She's old school, she doesn't mean anything by it. Sun 3:16 PM She says it every single visit. Sun 3:18 PM I'll talk to her. Sun 3:19 PM You said that after the last three visits too.

Five people offer opinions on the same situation.

Here is what each one noticed.

The Deep Thinker

The emotional opinion

What stands out

The emotional center here is that you feel unprotected in front of your own kids, and brushed off when you say so. One strong read: this isn’t just about your mother‑in‑law’s comment, it’s about your partner repeatedly promising to step in and then not following through. Every “I’ll talk to her” that doesn’t materialize teaches you that your discomfort ranks below keeping the peace with her, especially when it happens in front of the children. A real alternative: your partner might feel stuck between you and their mom, freeze, and then default to the quickest way to calm things (“I’ll talk to her”) without a real plan. That would mean this is more about conflict avoidance than not caring. What would distinguish them is whether, outside the heat of the moment, your partner can own the pattern and suggest a concrete change without you prompting it.

Best Friend

The protective opinion

The straight answer

Here’s the thing: you already know “I’ll talk to her” means nothing now. If he really talked, it’d stop or at least change. She insults your parenting in front of your kids. That’s not small. Next time, don’t wait on him. Calm voice, in the moment: “We’re not doing that comment anymore.” He can back you up or look weak, but you protect yourself.

Grandma

The long-view opinion

What experience says

I can hear that sting, especially with the kids watching. This isn’t just one bad afternoon, it’s a groove she’s worn in. I’ve seen this before, and I’ll tell you straight: if he won’t draw that line, you’re allowed to. Next visit, you cut in calm: “We parent how we decided. Please don’t say that in front of the kids again.” If she keeps on, you end the visit early. People treat you how you insist on being treated.

Sherlock Holmes

The careful opinion

The useful clue

The most revealing detail is temporal, not emotional: “I’ll talk to her” follows only after you state that she repeats this “every single visit” and that he has made the same promise three times before. The pattern is admission, reassurance, no observable change. Rather telling, this. He does not dispute what she said, nor acknowledge its impact in front of the children. Instead, he reframes: “She’s old school, she doesn’t mean anything by it.” That is not defence of you; it is defence of her and of his own inaction. A weaker reading would claim he is caught in the middle and trying his best. That explanation fails to account for the total absence of follow‑through across multiple visits. The simplest reading is that he prefers temporary peace with his mother to enforcing a boundary on your shared parenting in front of your children.

The Comedian

The absurdity opinion

The absurd part

“I’ll talk to her” is starting to sound like when a website says “we take your privacy seriously.” Technically words came out, but nothing on Earth has ever changed because of that sentence.
